Managing Your Plantings in the Crop Map

Heirloom’s Crop Map is where your planting schedule from the Game Plan takes visual form. This tutorial will guide you through the process of assigning plantings to specific beds within your blocks and managing those assignments throughout the growing season.

Prerequisites

Before you can assign plantings, you need to have:

  1. Created a Game Plan: Your plantings must first be defined in the Game Plan, where you set their timing, crop, cultivar, and other details.
  2. Defined Your Blocks: Your farm’s growing areas (blocks) must be created in the Farm Map and added to the Crop Map canvas.

Assigning Plantings: Step-by-Step

  1. Open the unassigned plantings panel that is located on the right side of the Crop Map screen. This panel displays all plantings from your Game Plan that are not yet assigned to a location.
  2. Find the planting you wish to assign. Use the following tools to streamline your search:
    • Browse the list of crops and plantings.
    • Search Bar: Type in a crop name to quickly filter the list.
    • Sort: Click the “Sort” dropdown to arrange plantings by crop, implantation date, or harvest date (start or end).
    • Filter: Click the “Filter” dropdown to show only “Unassigned,” “Assigned,” “Field,” or “Greenhouse” plantings.
    • Select the Planting: Click on the arrow next to the crop name to expand the view and see individual plantings.
    • Drag and Drop: Click and drag the selected planting from the panel onto the desired bed within a block on your Crop Map. Note : plantings can only be assigned to blocks with compatible bed sizes, as defined in your Game Plan and Farm Map.
    • Confirm Placement: Release the mouse button to drop the planting onto the bed. The planting bar will appear on the bed, visually representing the planting’s duration from its planting date to the end of its harvest window.

Managing Assigned Plantings

Once a planting is assigned, you can still manage it directly from the Crop Map:

  • View Planting Details: Hover over the planting bar on the Crop Map to see basic information like crop name, planting dates and cultivar.
  • Editing Plantings: Click on an assigned planting to open a pop-up window where you can modify its details (cultivar, planting method, dates, etc.). Changes made here will be reflected in your Game Plan as well. You can also access this window by clicking on the “Edit” button when selecting a planting in the Unassigned Plantings panel.
  • Unassigning Plantings
    • Individual Planting: Right-click on a planting and select “Unassign Planting” to remove it from the block and return it to the Unassigned Plantings panel. You can also click on the “Unassign” button when you expand the planting details in the Unassigned Plantings panel.
    • All Plantings from a Block: Right-click on a block and select “Unassign All Plantings” to clear all plantings from that block.

Important Notes

  • You can assign multiple plantings to a single bed, up to a maximum of 10, as long as their planting dates don’t overlap. Each planting will occupy a portion of the bed’s width (visualized as 0.1 for each portion).
  • If a planting exceeds the remaining space on a bed, the system will automatically assign the remainder to the next available bed in the same block, if possible. If no compatible bed is available to the left or right, the system will not allow you to assign the planting.
  • You cannot unassign a block that has plantings assigned to it. You must first unassign all plantings from that block.
  • To represent companion planting (e.g., basil between tomato plants), create separate plantings for each crop and assign them to the same bed, placing them side-by-side.
  • When dragging a planting, the system will highlight in green the beds where it can be placed, based on bed size and availability. You can modify these parameters in the “Edit Planting” window.
  • Ensure the planting’s bed size, as defined in the Game Plan, matches the bed size of the block where you’re assigning it. The system will prevent incompatible assignments. You can modify these parameters in the “Edit Planting” window.
  • The planting dates available for assignment are drawn from the Game Plan. Any changes to planting dates should be made in the Game Plan and will be reflected in the Crop Map.
