Heirloom allows you to manage not only crops but also the specific cultivars (varieties) within each crop. This is essential for accurate planning, tracking, and yield projections. Choosing the right cultivar can significantly impact your success, influencing everything from days to maturity and yield to disease resistance and market demand. This guide will walk you through adding and managing your cultivars in Heirloom, giving you the control you need to fine-tune your growing operation.
Adding a New Cultivar
Select the Crop: Find the crop you want to add a cultivar to. You must first add it to your season by clicking “Add”.

Open the “Select Cultivar” Dropdown: Click on the dropdown arrow next to “Select Cultivars” under the chosen crop.

Click “Add New Cultivar”: At the bottom of the dropdown list, you’ll find the option to “Add New Cultivar.” Click on it.
The “Create a Cultivar” window will appear:

- Name: Enter the name of the cultivar.
- How to specify weight: Select the appropriate weight specification method from the dropdown:
- Not specified: Use this if weight is not a primary tracking metric for this cultivar.
- Thousand seeds weight: Use this if you typically measure this cultivar by the weight of 1000 seeds.
- Number of seeds per unit: Use this if you measure by the number of seeds per a standard unit (e.g., per gram, per ounce).
Once you’ve filled in the information, click the “Create” button to add the cultivar to your list.
Managing Existing Cultivars
To change a cultivar’s information, you need to click on the pencil icon next to the cultivar’s name, which will bring up the same window as when you first created the cultivar.

To delete a cultivar, repeat the same step for editing the cultivar, by clicking on the pencil icon, then click the “Delete” button.

Note: if the cultivar is used in your calendar (Game Plan) with an active planting associated, you will first need to remove the planting before being able to delete the cultivar.
Setting Default Values for Cultivars
To streamline your planning process, Heirloom allows you to pre-populate important data for each cultivar in the Charts section. This data will then be automatically used when you create plantings in the Game Plan, saving you time and ensuring consistency.
You can set default values for things like days to maturity, row spacing, yield estimates, and even associate specific tasks with each cultivar.
